The image above shows part of the filter structure of the Antarctic krill: The first order filter setae have the second order setae attached to them. The second order setae are aligned in rows, these rows form a v-shape, the v shape of the setae are aligned towards the inside of the feeding basket. The purple ball shown trapped in the second order setae is one micrometer big, it is possible that this is a bacterium. To display the total area of this fascinating structure one would have to reproduce this image tile 7500 times.
