Kreacher is a fictional magical beast in the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling. He is a house-elf who formerly served the Black family and still maintains their views and prejudices. Kreacher is currently in the service of Harry Potter and, on Harry's orders, works at Hogwarts with other house-elves, however reluctantly.
The name Kreacher is probably a pun on "creature". It could also be derived from the German kriechen, meaning "to creep" or "kriecher" that means "groveler".
The family Kreacher served was the "Noble and Most Ancient House of Black". When Sirius Black was the only male member of the Black family left, Kreacher was forced to serve him, staying in the Order of the Phoenix headquarters. According to Dumbledore, Kreacher's existence under Sirius was as miserable as Dobby's with the Malfoy family: in both cases, the elves were treated by the masters with a lack of respect and kindness, were bullied, and denied their dignity.
Because Sirius Black had betrayed his mother, Kreacher (who revered Walburga Black) hated him and was not happy working for him. Kreacher seized his chance to leave when Sirius bellowed, "OUT!" He left the house and went to the only member of the Black family still free that he had any respect for: Sirius's cousin, Narcissa Malfoy (née Black), the wife of Lucius Malfoy and the mother of Draco Malfoy.
Lucius Malfoy, under orders from Lord Voldemort told Kreacher that if Harry Potter were to contact the house by means of the Floo Network, he was to lie and say Sirius was not there. Since Kreacher served the house of Black, he ould still take orders from the Malfoys, and as he did not belong to Harry, he could lie to him without having to punish himself. Kreacher later turned up in the attic and Sirius was convinced he had been there the whole time.
Kreacher followed Malfoy's plan, and it succeeded. Harry went to the Department of Mysteries to save Sirius, believing him to be in trouble. Sirius Black, who rushed to the Department to help Harry, was killed in the struggle there by his cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange.
In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry discovered that he had inherited all Sirius' possessions; this included Kreacher. This inheritance by Harry, and not Bellatrix (Sirius's eldest living relative, albeit murderer), was confirmed valid, when Kreacher obeyed Harry's command to "Shut up". Harry did not want to keep Kreacher, and immediately ordered him to work in the Hogwarts kitchens with other House-Elves. At Hogwarts, Kreacher's contempt for Harry came into conflict with Dobby's awe of him causing them to get into a number of violent fights, much to Peeves's delight. When Harry needed somebody to follow Draco Malfoy to find out where he was disappearing to, he was helped unwillingly by Kreacher and willingly by Dobby. They came back to him with the important information that Malfoy was going to the Room of Requirement. It is expected that Kreacher will play a very important role in the coming books and is confirmed by Rowling.[citation needed]
No announcement has yet been made regarding the casting of Kreacher's voice; however, it is confirmed that he will feature in the film.[1]
