[edit] AM 1240 History

KRDO-AM 1240 has been on the air since 1947. The call letters were always KRDO, and it was the first of the KRDO stations to sign on the air. The station was originally owned by Harry Hoth's Pikes Peak Broadcasting Company, which owned the station until June 2006 when News-Press & Gazette took over operations. The station went through many format changes over the years ranging from Adult Contemporary, Oldies, Country, and Sports Talk prior to its current NewsChannel format.

For information on the original KRDO-FM see KATC-FM

105.5 signed on in the early 1970's as KWYD-FM. For the first few years KWYD broadcast a Country music format before flipping to a Christian Radio format in 1975 which was a combination of Brokered Teaching and Talk programming mixed in with music, news and information. In 1989 KWYD was sold to Optima Communications and flipped the station to a NAC/Smooth Jazz format as KBZE and using the on air moniker "The Breeze."

Two years later the call letters and format were changed again. It became a Country station with the calls KHII and using the on-air handle "K-High." Optima Communications entered into a lease marketing agreement with Pikes Peak Broadcasting Company in 1993 and it took over operations of 105.5 FM. In 1996, Pikes Peak Broadcasting Company flipped the station back to a Smooth Jazz format this time calling itself Sax 105.5 and and adopting the calls KSKX. The station remained Smooth Jazz until News Press & Gazette unveiled its NewsChannel radio format in August 2006.
