Krakatoa - The Last Days is a BBC docu-drama directed by Sam Miller and based upon a selection of eye witness accounts of the 1883 eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in attempt to tell the story of one of the most destructive natural disasters known to man. It was - and is - the second greatest volcanic eruption in recorded history (after Tambora only 68 years before), erupting more than 18 cubic kilometres of tephra in less than 48 hours, and killing 36,500 people. A subplot, the personage of Rogier Verbeek (played by Kevin McMonagle), a Dutch geologist who had surveyed the area two years earlier and laid the basis for modern vulcanology with his research after the eruption, adds a scientific touch and a helpful map to the CGI that convincingly portrays the cloud, the collapse of the mountain, pyroclastic flows and a tsunami.

Also starring Rupert Penry-Jones as Willem Beijerinck and Olivia Williams as Johanna Beijerinck.

First broadcast in the UK on Sunday 7 May 2006 at 21:00 BST on BBC One. It was broadcast in the US as Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction on the Discovery Channel.
