Koumyou Sanzo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kōmyō-Sanzō is a fictional character in the popular manga/anime Saiyuki.
Koumyou Sanzo rescued a baby from the waters of the Yangtze river. The boy was named Kōryū of the "river flow"; a name he used until he was thirteen, when he became Genjō-Sanzō.
When he was ordained at 39, Kōmyō-Sanzō was the youngest person ever appointed a Sanzō (learned monk). He was witness to the death of Gōdai-Sanzō, and named his successor. He remained in contact with [[Ukoku Sanzo|Ukoku-Sanzō] after that. Ukoku-Sanzō, previously Ken'yū, overtook Kōmyō-Sanzō's record as the youngest Sanzō, being ordained at only 17.
Kōmyō-Sanzō was the head priest at Kinzan Temple, a small monastery in a mountainous area. He was not necessarily a very devout priest; he had long hair, usually braided, and he smoked. He also avoided his lectures, claiming he was "unworthy" to pass on the scriptures. Kōmyō-Sanzō was killed by yōkai trying to steal his two Tenchi Kaigen scriptures, having just ordained 13-year-old Kōryū as "Genjō-Sanzō". This sent the young Genjō-Sanzō on his quest to avenge his master and retrieve the Seiten Sripture that was stolen.
