Kotoka International Airport (IATA: ACC, ICAO: DGAA) in Accra, Ghana is the country's most important international air facility. It can receive aircraft up to the size of the Boeing 747-400. The airport is operated by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority. The airport used to be the main base for Ghana Airways, now replaced by Ghana International Airlines. It also houses a sizeable facility for the Ghana Air Force.
In 1967 the airport was named after Col. Emmanuel Kotoka, who was shot near the airport during the "Guitar-Boy" attempted coup.
The new departure and arrival terminals at KIA opened in 2004, and have given the airport a whole new look. Nevertheless, covered gangways to planes are still not in existence. To move from the gates (of which there are only two) to the airplanes, shuttle buses are provided.
In 2004, the airport served 806,365 passengers.
