Kotani Yasunori (Takenori) of the Yasukuni Shrine 1933-1945

On 8th July 1933, within the grounds of the Yasukuni SHrine on Kudan hill, Tokyo a unique ceremony took place which was well subscribed by the Army Ministry and the Cutural Ministry. Two swordsmiths and their respective sakite (assistants) were given their sword names by the Army Minister, General Araki and were accordingly awarded the swordnames of Yasutoku and Yasuhiro respectively. These men were Kajiyama Tokutaro of Hiroshima prefecture who was as student of the Shinshinto smith Yokoyama Sukeyoshi and Miyaguchi Shigeru whose linenage was the well known Kasama schol from Shizuoka prefecture The Chinese characters given in their swordnames were taken from their personal first names. (eg. Kajiyama Tokutaro became Yasutoku)

These men brought along two sakite (assistants) from their prefectures with them to Tokyo. Yasutoku brought his nephew, Kotani Kenzo and his son Kajiyama Toshimichi. Kotani
