Kostroma (cattle)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kostroma cattle breed (Russian: костромская порода крупного рогатого скота) is a popular Russian cattle breed. It was developed in the first half of the 20th century in the Kostroma Oblast of Russia's Upper Volga region, based mostly on cross-breeeding Kholmogory cows of Northern Russia with Swiss Schwyz bulls, with contributions from some other breeds as well. The breed has been certified by the Soviet People's Commissariat of Agriculture on November 27, 1944.

Kostroma cattle are regarded by Russian livestock farmers as one of the best breeds for both milk and beef production.
