Kosrae
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kosrae (pronounced [kosh-rye] in English), also known as Kusaie, is an island in Micronesia. It is a state of the Federated States of Micronesia with a population of 7,317 (1994 census) and a part of the Caroline Islands. The land area is 110 km². Kosrae is an island of stunning natural beauty. Largely unspoiled and rarely visited, Kosrae has become a destination for scuba divers and hikers. The coral reefs that surround the island are kept in pristine shape through an extensive mooring buoy system maintained by concerned residents and volunteers.
Lush vegetation and steep mountains keep the island largely undeveloped. Viewed from the sea, the island's distinct shape resembles a female body. This has led to the island being called "the island of the sleeping lady."
There is an airport at the northwestern coast of the island with flights from Hawaii and Guam.
The fictional American television series Lost has been linked to the island by some fans of the show. A numeric sequence that has prominence in Lost , known simply as 'The Numbers' (4 8 15 16 23 42), happens to correspond to a geographic latitude and longitude ( ) that is not far from Kosrae.
