Koso Abe (March 24, 1892June 19, 1947), was a vice admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. In 1942, he commanded the 6th Air Base Group which included Japanese military forces in garrisons throughout the Gilbert and Marshall Islands in the central Pacific Ocean.

Two weeks after United States (U.S.) Marine forces raided Makin Island (Butaritari) in the Gilbert Islands on August 17 and 18, 1942, nine Marines that had been accidentally left behind on the island during the raid were captured by Japanese forces. After moving the captured Marines to Kwajalein, Abe ordered that they be summarily executed. All nine Marines were executed by beheading on October 16, 1942.[2]

From December 27, 1943 until April 25, 1945, Abe was the schoolmaster of the Tateyama Naval Gunnery School in Japan. Until the end of the war, he served as a commander of base units at Sasebo Naval Base in Kyushu, Japan.[3]

After the war, Abe was tried and convicted of war crimes by the victorious Allied powers and sentenced to death. He was executed by hanging on June 19, 1947 on Guam.[4]
