Koshovyi Otaman

Koshovyi Otaman (Ukrainian: Кошовий отаман, lit. Otaman of the Host) was the highest military ranks of the Zaporizhian Cossacks from the 16th century. It was elected by the elders of the Zaporozhian Host. In 1723 this rank was replaced by a Nakazny Otaman, nominated by the Tsar of Russia. Among most famous Koshovyi Otamans were Ivan Pidkova and Ivan Sirko.
