KOPW is the callsign for the Omaha, Nebraska-based Rhythmic Contemporary FM radio station "Power 106.9". It is owned and operated by NRG Media.
[edit] History
KOPW was originally KOTD and had a Adult Standards format from 1992 to 1999, when it was sold to Waitt Media (later NPG Media), who in turn flipped the station to Adult Album Alternative as KCTY ("106.9 The City"). In 2004 it flipped to All-80s as "Retro 106.9," but by 2005 they became "106.9 Bob FM."
In 2003 their sister station KBLR, which was a AC, began to target the market with a R&B/Hip-Hop format as "HOT 97.3 & 107.7." The station was signal-challenged from the start, since the 97.3 signal (licensed to Blair, Nebraska) barely covered the metro and the 107.7 frequency was a translator. Despite the setback it did well ratings wise.
On December 29, 2006 at 3PM(CT), Waitt/NPG stunned the market by turning KCTY into the all-new KOPW, "Power 106.9," and in the process flipping its format to Rhythmic Contemporary. The radical changes resulted in both "HOT 97.3 & 107.7" and "106.9 Bob FM" to cease operations and formats respectively, but at the same time retaining the current airstaffers from KBLR as well as a better signal coverage (and a more broad-based audience) with the Rhythmic format.
With KOPW going Rhythmic, it now puts them in direct competition with Top 40 Mainstream competitor KQCH (Channel 94.1), who, incidentally, started out as a Rhythmic when they debuted in 1999.
