Welcome to Wikipedia!

Hello Konstable/Archive 1, welcome to Wikipedia!

I noticed nobody had said hi yet... Hi!

If you feel a change is needed, feel free to make it yourself! Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone (yourself included) can edit any article by following the Edit this page link. Wikipedia convention is to be bold and not be afraid of making mistakes. If you're not sure how editing works, have a look at How to edit a page, or try out the Sandbox to test your editing skills.

You might like some of these links and tips:

If, for some reason, you are unable to fix a problem yourself, feel free to ask someone else to do it. Wikipedia has a vibrant community of contributors who have a wide range of skills and specialties, and many of them would be glad to help. As well as the wiki community pages there are IRC Channels, where you are more than welcome to ask for assistance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Thanks and happy editing, -- Alf melmac 09:51, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

dino images

Thankx for uploading several dinosaur images to wiki commons, but some of them were already uploaded. BTW the image Allosaurus2.jpg shows a Ceratosaurus individual (also already uploaded as "Ceratosaurus2"). ps thanx also for your editing of the "camarasaurus heads image" :) --Dudo2 21:09, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Claws of the Raptor

Hello, I m really sorry, that I can't make another more detailed photo. This figures were part of an exhibition and they are no longer available (exhibition is now in other countries). But I got some more photos of this exhibition and could send them to you, if you want (about 5 or 7). (pictures of eggs and Tyrannosaurus) Please give me your email adress. Greetings --Nfu-peng 13:29, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry about it. I'll be around all day, so if you spot any more pages like that created, I'll delete them and block the user indefinitely for abuse of sockpuppets. FireFoxT [11:46, 6 April 2006]

Dumfries and Galloway

Thanks so much for uploading such a great image. It gives some idea of the wonderful scenery up there (I was walking up and around Ettrick Pen last week). Maybe it will encourage more people to leave the overcrowded Lake District and visit. Robma 08:39, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks re. the SkySeer article

Thanks for posting that new article for me. I do have an account here...but I'm an ex-administrator who quit the project in good stead about four months ago and requested de-sysopping at the same time due to the actions of a very spiteful user and the egregious error of another administrator.

Wikipedia has just become too crazy and anarchaic for its own good, so I get my "wiki kicks" on other projects, some Wikia, some not. I was surprised not to see an article here since that UAV has been on the news quite a bit lately, but I didn't want to sign in to post it. No way. Simply put, I didn't want credit for the article and I didn't want others thinking I'd returned. I made that mistake about a month ago when I did sign in long enough to paste something I'd done at another wiki, searched the new pages at that time and even wound up fixing an article and commenting on its AFD page. No more for me, thanks. I'm gone for good and glad of it. Jimbo Wales is quite aware of my situation, expressed some concern, but nothing ever became of it.

There is a lot of good information to be had, a lot of good information yet to come and there are a vast number of good, dedicated users such as yourself. There is also a firestorm of idiotic edits by new (and established) users, personal attack pages, hatemongering and just plain bitter users screwing around here to the point where I figured I'd had enough. Apparently, many of Wikipedia's finest editors have felt the same way and have dropped out as well.

Take care and thanks again. Respectfully, 71.102.76.166 06:45, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

No problem. Of course I have noticed the things that upset you. Way too much time here is wasted on the personal attacks and petty disputes rather than writing quality articles. But this is hard to avoid when there is a large community of people from a lot of differnet backgrounds I guess.--Konstable 13:18, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Re : Dark Reign

Not vandalism. Stormer and Sparrow or FnS constantly used to make references to all things homosexual. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 210.10.231.146 (talkcontribs).

Ok, sorry for the mistake, I will not revert it now; but I suspect it still violates Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy as it sounds like more of a non-factual slang term (if it is, it should probably be presented more like one). Though because I am very tired and can't think at the moment and don't really know anything on the subject anyway, so I will leave it up to you and other editors of the articles to judge on that.--Konstable 15:39, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Aggressive pruning of NZ 2ndary school pages (MRGS in particular)

Hi Konstable

I'll explain what I did to the MRGS article first then the reasoning behind my recent edits in general.

MRGS

Deletion of sections: Motto. For a start the motto was already in the infobox. However I admit I was a bit too aggressive eith the pruning (explained below). Facility for physically disabled students: Since it was an unusual feature of the school I kept a mention of it, however it was writen in an obviously POV way. My decision to delete most of the information on that was that it seemed to add no substance; specifically "The Centre is a integral part of the school providing quality education for physically disabled students" and "The MacLean Centre has continued to grow in size and reputation", which both have POV elements. Awards: I deleted the awards because to me it seemed that it was just a part of the school trophy-cabinetting that is endemic to school pages. The external link was deleted due to data redundancy (already in the infobox). Russell Crowe's mention was not lost.

My edits in general

I've sent messages to other users about this as well. My motivation behind the edits is because in most cases, the authors of the school pages are almost always ex-students, which implicitly adds bias (both kinds positive and negative). I maintain that articles on genuinely notable schools would already have been/would be written by outsiders. I apologise if my edits were taken by surprise. However, the pruning of articles will "encourage stronger growth".

I'll make sure to keep your comment in mind and will be less agressive when editing.

Cheers, Mr Bluefin 07:19, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, it needs to be done I guess. And thanks for the work you're doing! Just be careful - if a statement is written in a POV manner doesn't always mean it needs deleting. And if too much information is removed, some of these schools may end up on AfD which won't be good for anyone (there are a lot of high schools going through there regularly).--Konstable 07:24, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Pete Peters

He's back on my discussion page. I am trying to take your advice and be as civil as I can, but this guy registered last week and has done nothing but harrass me.Arthur Ellis 01:09, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps a Request for Mediation would be appropriate for you, if Pete agrees to participate that is. If he doesn't and this goes on then you can try an Request for Comment on the basis of harrassment, but I would strongly recommend to try to go into mediation instead.--Konstable 02:02, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll dig through the forms and try to figure out how to do it. Arthur Ellis 02:29, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

hey, got your message

which edit are you talking about? I haven't edited an article, only contributed to the reference desk, and have a unique IP address. which edit did you revert?

got your new message, no problem, it does belong there, but I don't know which edits you reverted, it would be nice if you could put them back in. (Esp since I don't have a roll back button). Or I guess if you link on my talk page to the edit(s) you reverted I can put them back; I don't know which ones you reverted.

hey, nevermind, I figured out how to get to Special:Contributions/Konstable. I see what the problem is now, there's another user you're dealing with 82. address, and my 82.131 is similiar also to 86.132 you're also dealing with. I'll revert just my edits. Thanks for keeping Wikipedia vandal-free.

got your new message ("Ok, I put it back. To revert a page you don't need a rollback button. You can just go into the article's history, click on the timestamp of the version you want to revert, then edit that old version and save dispite the warning. A rollback is just a convinience button that admins have - undos all the edits of a specific user without having to go through that procedure.--Konstable 09:59, 4 July 2006 (UTC)") as I was writing that. User:Richhoncho

This is funny and no harm is done. I edited my user page, but wasn't logged in, so it appeared as vandalism, which you kindly amended, but I wouldn't mind the vandalism warning coming off my IP address user page - just to show I don't deliberately vandalise pages. --Richhoncho 13:20, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the amendment to user page and thanks for amendment, but if it looked "disgruntled" maybe it should have stayed off. I'll think about that. Thanks again, I thought the whole episode was humorous. --Richhoncho 13:33, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

My second mistake during this vandal patrol session. The previous was reverting the sandbox =P I need to slow down.--Konstable 13:34, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Bots with AWB

FFBot is AWB. It didn't require any editing or anything like that whatsoever, I just programmed AWB to do what I wanted it to, which is pretty easy when you're used to it. The bot is simply AWB running in automatic mode. Thanks, — FireFox 14:36, 08 July '06

Thanks. I guess haven't poked around the settings enough yet.--Konstable 14:37, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Well, the things that comes in handy most of all is find and replace. Without that, the bot is probably completely useless. Remember not everyone gets automatic editing mode, only approved or on-trial bots can edit automatically. — FireFox 15:23, 08 July '06

Removing my fur trade comments

Dear Konstable. You might feel that my comments about the fur trade were inappropriate but like it or not I was merely stating a fact. Animals are in some countries skinned alive for their fur. If you would prefer I back up my statements with references then that is not difficult because there is sufficient data available on the internet. If you persist in supressing my statements then you are the one who is guilty of deliberate misinformation.

Why is it that the article on Fur clothing can include a link to Fur producing websites that present a biased picture of the fur trade whereas my link to websites presenting the flip side of the coin has been deleted?

Shouldn't wikipedia be about freedom of information and not about presenting a one sided version of the facts? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Chrisdickenson (talkcontribs).

Thanks for the feedback, but at Wikipedia everything needs to be presented in a balanced neutral point of view. Which I felt your edits weren't doing. If you verify these claims with citations of reliable sources, as I'm sure this is possible, feel free to reinsert the material. But please make sure that you do cite your sources, write it in a neutal-factual manner and don't just put it in as personal analysis. Also don't replace other material which is already in the article. Since it looks quite controversial, I would suggest you rule up some draft first and ask on the talk page of the article if the other editors find it acceptable to include.--Konstable 13:50, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
Correction Actually I was thinking about something else. What you did is insert the same statement in a couple of places and an external link. External links should be at the bottom in the external link section, statements like yours should be with references and in appropriate sections (probably just the "Controversy" section on that article).--Konstable 13:54, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Good Faith.

The thing was, I was reverting the sme edit you reverted, you just reverted it first so I ended up reverting your edit back to the one that you tried to rid. I hope tht made sense :-) - Erebus555 14:22, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Ah, yeah. I had that happen to me before. No probs.--Konstable 14:23, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Suburbs of Dunedin

Hi - I've reverted some of your recent change to Suburbs of Dunedin, New Zealand. Although the people and language are Māori, the Dunedin suburb is only ever written "Maori Hill". Grutness...wha? 05:55, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for that. I will flip through my similar edits to make sure I did not repeat this mistake.--Konstable 05:59, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
The Dunedin article looks fine. As to why it's just Maori Hill, I think it's one of those "It looks nicer and is easier to write" things that the NZ Lands and Survey people decided on, like missing out the apostrophes in things like Hawkes Bay. What's grammatically/linguistically correct doesn't often enter into their thinking :( Grutness...wha? 23:58, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Please revert this

On the Ao (mythology) article you made this edit:

Oops, I screwed up

I was trying to rename the "Qdb.us" page to "QDB.us". Since I couldn't do that directly, I first moved it to "QDB.us temp", with the intention of moving it back to "QDB.us". Oops -- the original page has been auto-created by Wikipedia, and now I can't overwrite it. I guess an admin has to delete it and then move the temp page back? Plagiarism

Thanks for your welcome note on my talk page.

I read the Perun aricle and found the contributions to a great extent plagiarised. I do not want to be involved into an edit war - which might be imminent due to the fact that some people are trying to deny the obvious findings.

I wonder - might you be of some help in protecting a minimum level of editorial credibility and integrity there?--Matt Parlow 03:12, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

I think there is no need to get it protected, there haven't been too many edits to it recently. The last edit before you was 16th of July, protection is meant for articles in the middle of edit wars, which is not happening on this page right now. Instead you should try to reach an agreement on the article on the talk page (which is actually what protection is used for - to stop edit wars until discussions are concluded). I will have a closer look at the nature of your dispute to see if I can help out. --Konstable 04:28, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Kind Request

Since you have contributed to Pericles and you seem interested in ancient Greece, I would be grateful if you could go through Demosthenes and express me your opinion about the article. I have rewritten it and I think that it could have a chance to become FA. Hence, if you have the time and the interest, I would like to have your opinion about its present form.--Yannismarou 08:28, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Sure, I will have a look, but it might take a couple days, I'm finding less and less time for Wikipedia these days. I should warn you thought that I'm not really an expert on Ancient Greece, I just happen to be interested in it.--Konstable 10:44, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm neither an expert! My expertise is law. My hobby is history. so, don't worry!--Yannismarou 15:45, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Pericles

I citated the two "is considered to be". For both of them my source was The Encyclopaedic Dictionary The Helios. Today I bought a very interesting book: "Thucydides on Strategy" in English, written by two Greek scholars. Through this book I also found additional, very interesting information concerning the military strategy of Pericles.

Thereby, I rewrote the section "Military Achievements". I also read in a Greek newspaper that the European institute of studies based in Delphi issued a collective work about Pericles (it is the anniversary of the 2.500 years from his birth). I hope that I'll soon be able to possess it. My only concern is that the article is getting bigger and bigger (78 Kb now)!

I saw that, beyond the automated suggestions, no other suggestions are added in the peer review. Nonetheless, I donot think that we should be discouraged. Have a nice weekend!--Yannismarou 17:03, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Why is the list of charismatic leaders POV?

The term charismatic authority is a neutral sociological concept and each person on the list is well sourced. Thanks for informing me of the Afd. I am learning Russian by the way. Andries 23:01, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, even if charisma can be a neutral concept, it seems that the criteria of inclusion on this list centres around a single definition, which feels POV to me. Also I don't quite see any usefulness of such a list. Good luck with your Russian!--Konstable 11:33, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

University of Auckland

The block was necessitated by a very particular obnoxious vandal who has been abusing University of Auckland computers, and more or less doing his best to make sure they get blocked. This is why I blocked the address for anonymous edits only. A registered user can still use the same computers to edit. There have been cases in the past in which a student at a particular university has become such an odious vandal, that the university was "collectively punished" with a block; sometimes this is exactly what the vandal was trying to achieve (see, for example, user:woggly/Bar-Ilan vandal). I am not the only administrator who holds that requiring editors from a certain IP to register is a fair price to pay for a massive reduction in vandalism (see [2]). In the case of Auckland University, the bad apple is a vandal who has nicknamed himself "Loserdick", you can read about him here: Wikipedia:Long term abuse/Loserdick. He alone brought on the block of two U of Auckland IPs. If you yourself are affiliated with Auckland University, you can help by bringing the matter to the attention of University officials; there have been precedents for universities taking disciplinary action against students who repeatedly used university computers to vandalise Wikipedia. Also, if you can explain to me how you or any other legitimate registered user is being prevented from contributing to Wikipedia by the block, I will undo it. I have no intention of tolerating the death threats, impersonation, foul language and disruption for disruption's sake that has issued from the "Loserdick" vandal, for the benefit of hypothetical unregistered users. --woggly 21:53, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your new contributions to Pericles. I know very well that the way I answered to Septentrionalis was not the right one, but I get furious, when I see an "object" based on a reasoning that I regard as something more than ridiculous!--Yannismarou 08:11, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

A user in Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Pericles pointed out: "My one quibble is with the timeline at the end of the article. I'm not sure if it's customary to list events on timelines in the present tense; all those present participles are throwing me off." What do you think of that?--Yannismarou 09:33, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

I am not sure. I couldn't find any guidelines regarding this. I would probably prefer past tense myself, but I don't see that it matters too much.--Konstable 11:28, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the nice words! But your advice and contributions were also very useful! You helped me understand what was initially going on wrong with the article. By the way, we now have 18 supports and an absolute consensus, which I think is a record number! In the past I've also got furious with some administrators (this is one of the reasons I donot want to become one!). But I'm sure you'll work everything out. See you again around. Cheers!--Yannismarou 06:16, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

WoW templates

I think those need to go, too. this sums it up of what I said, elsewhere. The only thing is if those go, there will need a massive renaming and I don't have any automated scripts to do that. Maybe these should wait for nonmination until after the WoW pages are gone as deleting them before WoW's pages are gone would be too soon. Anomo 01:39, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

I think you may be misunderstanding what I nominated. It was not a template, but rather an article on WoW's "Appearances outside of the English Wikipedia".--Konstable 01:43, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Auckland

Sorry if it seems I'm ignoring you. You may notice I've not had much time for Wikipedia recently, for (very good) personal reasons. The Loserdick situation is hard to follow chronologically because he keeps skipping IPs. I'm afraid I don't have the time to invest to show you how obvious it is that all the vandalism was issuing from the same individual. Edits like this one: [3] are typical, using a new IP to vandalise userpage of an admin who blocked a previous IP. As you feel so strongly on this, I will unblock the U of Auckland IP. Like you said, the block is not an effective way of stopping this vandal anyway. But please keep an eye out for further vandalism from the IP, and undo it if it happens. I won't be able to. As for the idea that I "boast to my friends" about making blocks, that's one of the funniest things I've ever read. Yeah, right. Way to impress my friends. Not. Try to keep in mind that most admins here are usually acting in good faith.--woggly 21:04, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
