Konkani Brahmins

Konkani brahmins are those Brahmins whose mother-tongue is Konkani and/or Marathi, two related language spoken in western India. Konkani brahmins hail mainly from the southern part of the Maharashtra coast, Goa and coastal Karnataka.
Most Konkani brahmins belong to the Smartha sect, meaning that they adhere to the Advaita philosophy expounded by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. Prominent communities among the Konkani brahmins include:
- Saraswat Brahmins, including:
- Goud Saraswat Brahmins - speak Konkani and Marathi.
- Chitrapur Saraswats Brahmins - speak Marathi and Konkani and some Kannada in Karnataka.
- Rajapur Saraswat Brahmins - speak a dialect of Marathi called Malvani.
- Chitpavan Brahmins, also known as "Konkanastha" Brahmins - speak pure Marathi.
