Kolari (island), Russia

Kolari (Russian: Гогланд; Finnish: Tytärsaari; Swedish: Tytterskär) is an island in the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea, located 75 km away from the coast of Finland. The island is a part of the Leningrad Oblast, Russia. The area of Kolari (formerly Russian Большой Тютерс, Bolšoi Tjuters), between 1944-1948) Island is approximately 8.3 sq km.

Kolari has been inhabited by Finns as long as it is known to have been populated. At least since the 16th century, apart from occasional seal hunters and fishermen since the stone age. Between 1809-1944 the island was part of Finland as a township in Viipuri province. In World War II the inhabitants were evacuated, and the island fell into Soviet hands.
