Kokorokan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kokorokan is a karate style which broke off Seido in 1987, in an attempt to find a middle ground between the old style Kyokushin and Seido.
[edit] History
Kokorokan Karate originated from the traditional form of Karate called Kyokushin. Kaicho(Grandmaster) Tadashi Nakamura is responsible for bringing Kyokushin to the U.S from Japan. Because of the exteme brutality involved with Kyokoshin, it slightly changed its style and methods of discipline, as well as changing its name to Seido in the U.S. Seido originated in upstate New York. Eventually, do to financial disagreements, the original founders of Seido, not including Nakamura, broke off from the organization, both starting new forms of Karate, one of which became Kokorokan.
Shihan Frank Rosseti was the main person responsible for creating Kokorokan, after breaking off from Seido. Rosseti opened his new dojo in Troy, NY. His intenention when creating Kokorokan, was to find the middle ground between Kyokushin and Seido. Kokorokan is extremely similar to Kyokushin and Seido as far as certain techniques go, such as self-defense techniques, katas, and class format.
Shihan Roesseti still runs the original dojo in Troy, NY, with Shihan Jeff Dooley, an original Kokorokan student. Several Kokorokan dojos can be currently found throghout the United States.
