Kohsan District

The Kohsan(Kohistan) District is situated in the western part of Herat Province,Afghanistan.It borders Iran in the west, Gulran District in the north and Ghoryan District in the south and east.The population is 46 300 (2005 data).59% of them are Pashtun,35% Tajik, 5% Balouch and less than 1% Turkmen.The district center is the town of Kohsan.The district is located about 116 kilometres (3 hours) west of Hirat city.
The district is mainly a desert with patches of irrigated lands. Islam Qala, one of the officials borders crossing with Iran, is located in the district.
The Hari Rud River flows through the district and near by the district center.The drought is a serious problem for the agriculture,which is the main sourse of income,and almost 60% of the arable land is not in use.
The ealth services and the education need serious improvement.
