Kohnstein

The Kohnstein is a mountain, 2 km southwest of the village of Niedersachswerfen and 3 km northwest of the center of the city of Nordhausen (state of Thuringia, Germany). The mountain is at latitude=51.54211810740675 and longitude=10.74411392211914.
It is the site in which the V2 rocket was manufactured by forced prison labor from 1944 until 1945 during World War II, in an extensive network of tunnels under the mountain. This camp, in which around 20,000 people died over an 18-month period, was called Mittelbau-Dora, or sometimes 'the Nordhausen camp' in various news footage.
In the decades immediately after World War II, much of the site was re-engineered, re-used, flooded, and looted. However, in the 1990's (after the reunification of Germany), the site was finally protected, a museum was built to commemorate those who died, and a portion of Mittelbau-Dora was restored for the museum.
