Koek
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Koek comes from the Dutch or Afrikaans word "cake". A common Afrikaans dessert is vetkoek (prounounced fat-cook) literally meaning "fat cake." The word "koek" refers to the method in which the cake is prepared. It is a doughnut-like dessert which is made from flour, sugar and yeast. It is rolled in balls and then deep fried. It is commonly eaten with butter or filled with jam or a more savory filling. In a traditional South African braai, or barbeque, vetkoek may be served alongside boerworst, (South African sausage). Koeksisters are made from a similar dough but are braided in long strips then coated in a sticky sweet syrup.
