The Kodaikanal International School is an international school for pre-school to Grade 12 students located in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, southern India. Kodaikanal is a city in the Palani Hills. Founded in 1901, it is a Christian, co-educational, multicultural and boarding school for students aged 4-19. In 1976 it became the first school in India to offer the International Baccalaureate. It also awards its own high school diploma and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges, USA and recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.

[edit] Students

As of 2005 there are approximately 500 students, of whom half are foreign nationals. KIS is a diverse community and has teaching staff and students from over 30 different countries around the world. KIS is considered to be one of the most prestigious schools in India and is held in high esteem. KIS fees are comparable with other schools of this quality in India ranging from USD6000-7500 per term. There are two terms each year, from July to November and January to May.

[edit] Campus

KIS has one of the most beautiful campuses in India and overlooks a massive man-made lake. It is also considered to be one of the most liberal schools where the students are considered to have a progressive outlook on all matters being actively taught to reflect and question. KIS has three campuses, Highclerc for the High and Middle Schools, Ganga Campus for the Elementary School and the Wilderness Campus, located about two hours away in Poondi, which serves as an outdoor education program and will soon be used to provide a one-term, environmental learning experience to all 9th graders. There are also several compounds which house the dormitories and staff accommodation. There are currently 14 student dormitories situated around the school campus and on hills surrounding Kodaikanal.

[edit] Selection

The selection process is quite simple, requiring applicants to take a test before they are admitted.

KIS participates in the International Honor Choir and Band held in Europe on a yearly basis and has an award winning program in Social Experience with on-going aid projects in several Southern Indian villages. KIS sends all Middle and High School students out on field trips for a week every year to enable them to have first hand experiences of life in India following a range of different themes.
