Koch Bihar is the western portion of the Koch kingdom in India that remained after the eastern portion Koch Hajo separated from it following the death of Nara Narayana in 1586. Nara Narayana's son Lakshmi Narayana was the first ruler of this kingdom. This kingdom was a princely state during the British rule.
