KLIV is an AM radio station in the Silicon Valley based in San Jose, California. The station operates at 1590 kHz on the AM band. It is owned by Empire Broadcasting Company, and is headed by George Sampson. It identifies itself as 1590 KLIV with CNN Headline News and local news. The station dedicates itself to traffic reports eight times an hour, or roughly every six to seven minutes. In the morning, traffic reports are generally followed by weather reports courtesy of The Weather Channel. Between traffic reports, the station generally alternates between locally anchored news segments, and segments rebroadcast from CNN Headline News.

KLIV is also the radio home of San Jose State University football.

[edit] History

KLIV has been on the air since September 1946. It was originally KSJO, a 1000-watt daytime-only station. KLIV had changed hands on July 1, 1967 (four months before this broadcast), when it was acquired by two former Rochester, N.Y., radio executives, Robert S. Kieve and James M. Trayhern, Jr., who had incorporated as Empire Broadcasting. Four decades later, Bob Kieve remained as the owner of KLIV, one of the few independent radio station owners left in the region.
