Klöckner Stadium is home to four national powerhouse programs — Virginia men's and women's soccer in the fall and men's and women's lacrosse teams in the spring. The stadium was built in 1992 at a cost of $3.4 million, and its naming rights were awarded to the Klöckner Group of Germany, for $1.2 million. The Virginia men's soccer team won National Championships in the first three years they played at Klöckner, and including the year prior the string of national titles was four in a row. They have gone on to win numerous ACC Championships while making Klöckner their home, including the most recent two (2003 and 2004).
Additionally, both Virginia lacrosse teams have won National Championships while at Klöckner — 1999,2003,2006 for the men, as well as 1993 and 2004 for the women (who were also national runners-up in 2005). The fourth team playing on this field, women's soccer, participated in the 2001 Final Four.
Watching games at Klöckner under a fog can give fans an eerie feeling, as if they are witnessing an event at Stonehenge, surrounded by the unique obelisk-like poles encircling the playing surface. As at Scott Stadium, some spectators sit or stand in "grass seating", as well as in the bleachers.
The stadium has fast become a famous landmark for soccer in the United States. Only thirteen years old, Klöckner Stadium has already played host to twenty-seven NCAA Tournament soccer matches, including seven in Quarterfinal rounds. It is also the site of United States Soccer Federation events and United States National Soccer Team Olympic qualifiers.
The largest crowd to see a game at Klöckner Stadium was in 1994 when 7,807 fans watched an NCAA tournament game against James Madison University. The largest lacrosse crowd was on March 25, 2006, when a game against Johns Hopkins University attracted 7,440 spectators.
During the 2006 soccer season, a video board was installed at Klöckner Stadium. It debuted on September 27 during a men's soccer game between Virginia and American.
