Kishima District, Saga

Kishima (杵島郡; -gun) is a district located in Saga Prefecture, Japan.

As of 2006, the district has an estimated population of 45,305 and a density of 335 persons per km². The total area is 135.40 km².

  • April 1, 1889 - Throughout Japan "natural settlements" are merged into cities, towns, and villages. At this time Kishima District consists of one town, Takeo (武雄町) and 23 villages.
  • June 7, 1900 - The village of Takeo (武雄村) is incorporated into the town of Takeo (1 town, 22 villages).
  • April 1, 1932 - The villages of Yamaguchi (山口村), Oda (小田村), and Sarushi (佐留志村) merge to form the village of Kōhoku (江北村) (1 town, 20 villages).
  • January 1, 1936 - The village of Ōmachi gains town status (2 towns, 19 villages).
  • April 1, 1936 - The village of Fukuji (福治村) gains town status and is renamed Shiroishi (白石町) (3 towns, 18 villages).
  • April 29, 1944 - The village of Kitagata gains town status (4 towns, 17 villages).
  • April 1, 1952 - The village of Kōhoku gains town status (5 towns, 16 villages).
  • April 1, 1954 - (4 towns, 9 villages)
    • The villages of Tachibana (橘村), Wakagi (若木村), Nishi-Kawanobori (西川登村), Asahi (朝日村), Takeuchi (武内村), Higashi-Kawanobri (東川登) and the town of Takeo merge to form the city of Takeo, which then separates from the district.
    • The villages of Sumiyoshi (住吉村) and Nakato (中道村) merge to form the village of Yamauchi (山内村).
  • April 1, 1955 - The villages of Kinkō (錦江村) and Ryūō (竜王村) merge to form the village of Ariake (有明村) (4 towns, 8 villages).
  • July 20, 1955 - The villages of Rokkaku (六角村) and Suko (須古村) are incorporated into Shiroishi (4 towns, 6 villages).
  • September 30, 1955 - The village of Minami-Ariake (南有明村) is incorporated into the village of Ariake (4 towns, 5 villages).
  • April 1, 1956 - The village of Hashishita (橋下村) is incorporated into the towns of Kitagata and Shiroishi (4 towns, 4 villages).
  • July 1, 1956 - The village of Kita-Ariake (北有明村) is incorporated into the town of Shiroishi (4 towns, 3 villages).
  • September 1, 1960 - The village of Yamauchi gains town status (5 towns, 2 villages).
  • October 1, 1962 - The village of Ariake gains town status (6 towns, 1 village).
  • April 1, 1967 - The village of Fukudomi gains town status (7 towns).
  • January 1, 2005 - The towns of Fukudomi and Ariake merge into the town of Shiroishi (5 towns).
  • March 1, 2006 - The towns of Yamauchi and Kitagata merge into the city of Takeo (3 towns).
