Kirsten Cohen (née Nichol) is a fictional character on the FOX television series The O.C., played by Kelly Rowan.
Kirsten is the eldest daughter of real estate developer Caleb Nichol and older sister of Hailey Nichol and Lindsay Gardner. She is a graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in Art History. Kirsten has three children: Seth, Ryan, and Sophie.
She married husband Sandy Cohen sometime during her rebellious twenties (she states that when they fell in love she "lived in a mail truck and stank of patchouli"). Since marrying Sandy and giving birth to their son Seth, Kirsten moved back from Berkeley and joined her father at the Newport Group, becoming somewhat of a workaholic. In contrast to her husband, Kirsten Cohen is relatively conservative.

[edit] Season One
During the first season, Kirsten had to deal with suddenly having another child, a teenager, Ryan Atwood coming into her family's life. At first, she was skeptical, mainly because she wanted to be protective of her only son Seth, but eventually allowed Ryan to stay with them after his mother left him. She and Sandy became Ryan's legal guardians not long after that.
She was best friends with next-door neighbor Jimmy Cooper in high school, and they used to date each other. In the first season finale, she hinted to Theresa Diaz that she had an abortion early in her life.
[edit] Season Two
The problems began for her during the second season when she feared that her husband was cheating on her with an old girlfriend, Rebecca Bloom. Sandy and Kirsten's marriage began to deteriorate, and she turned to alcohol to compensate. Her alcoholism was fuelled by working closely with a man whom she was having a crush on, Newport Living magazine editor Carter Buckley, who also drank too much.
Towards the end of the second season, Kirsten crashed her car while driving drunk and caused a scene at her father's funeral. Following an intervention, she was checked into a rehabilitation program.
[edit] Season Three
At Suriak, she met Charlotte Morgan, who seemed to be interested in her. In reality, she was a con artist who was only after her as an unsuspecting partner in a con. Kirsten returned home and created a high-class dating service with her one-time stepmother Julie Cooper-Nichol. Over the course of season 3, Kirsten and Sandy once again find themselves amidst conflict due to Sandy's decision to take over the Newport Group. This causes her to relapse, yet the problem is settled when Sandy decides to quit the job.
[edit] Season Four
In the fourth season, she had to deal with the beginning of NewMatch as a legitimate business. After setting up a new and attractive office, she then attempted to garner a silent partner in Gordon Bullit by setting him up with Julie. After receiving an entire clientele from a retiring dating service in Laguna Beach, she then had to deal with several socialites bored with the Republican golf loving investment bankers on offer.
She has to deal with a family crisis later in the season when Frank Perry, an accountant brought in by Bullit to deal with NewMatch's books, reveals his secret past. In The French Connection, she becomes suspicious of Julie and sets herself up with a client in order to discover the truth about the business NewMatch. She ostracizes Julie and fires her after she uncovers the business had become a prostitution ring.
On the night of her 40th birthday, Sandy pulls up in front of her party in a mailtruck, exactly the same model as the one they lived in while they were at Berkeley. Sandy then gives her the real present - two around-the-world first class air tickets. Kirsten tells Sandy that she can top the present. They go and talk privately inside the Yacht Club and she tells him that she went to the doctor earlier. Worried, Sandy asks if she is sick, and Kirsten responds by saying, "Yes... but only in the mornings." Then Kirsten tells Sandy that she is pregnant and they are going to have a baby. Sandy is overjoyed about the news and they share a hug after Sandy tells her he loves her, and she answers, "Good, because there's going to be a lot more of me to love."
In The Case of the Franks, flashbacks are shown of Kirsten's life, her high-school romance with Jimmy Cooper and eventually her first meeting with Sandy in Berkeley. It is shown that Kirsten and Jimmy were the Prom King and Queen, and that they broke up because of her decision to go to Berkeley instead of USC with him. She meets Sandy in Berkeley, with him participating in a campaign for the elections. He offers her a promotional pin, something that she says she will wear only because it is stylish, and something that she gave Sandy during their conversation in the bedroom, having found it after turning the house upside down. Young Sandy then asks her for coffee, and she agreed. In the same episode, Kirsten also admits to Sandy that before she attended Berkeley, she had an abortion, a fact she had hinted to Theresa when they discussed Theresa and Ryan's baby at the end of the first season.
After the earthquake hits Newport Beach in The Shake Up, Kirsten is found to have fallen on the ground, on her stomach, by Sandy. He tries to help her stand up, but what with the falling debris all over them, he instead tries to protect her by covering her.
In The Night Moves, after undergoing through several tests to make sure her baby is unharmed following a fall down the stairs, Kirsten discovers that her baby is a girl. In the series finale, she gives birth to her daughter in the Cohens first (and present) house in Berkeley. They name her Sophie Rose, after Sandy's mother.
