From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kingmaker Novices' Chase is a Grade 2 National Hunt chase in the United Kingdom for five-year-old and above novices run over a distance of 2 miles 110 yards (3,319 metres) at Warwick Racecourse in February. There are twelve fences to be jumped in the race.
The race was abandoned at Warwick in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and transferred on each occasion to Wincanton Racecourse. When run at Wincanton, the race distance is 2 miles (3,219 metres) and thirteen fences are jumped.
It was first run in 1991 in early May over a distance of 2 miles 4 furlongs 110 yards (4,124), From 1996 it was run in early May over a distance of 2 miles and from 2000 over the current distance of 2 miles 110 yards.
The race title comes from the nickname of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, who was known as "Warwick the Kingmaker" during the Wars of the Roses.
