Kingdom of Monomatapa

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kingdom of Monomatapa: named after the king who ruled over a Southeast African country that the Africans now call Zimbabwe.

The Monomatapa kingdom was a curse amongst the other African tribes. It was heavely involved in the Arab slave trade.

It was predominantly Shona and was a copy based on an older empire which was established by what was termed “ the strange ones” in African Folklaw. (These strange ones were reported to have white skins, red hair and green eyes and had been driven out many centuries earlier.)

The last empress was an albino that was reputed to be possessed after being trapped underground for a time near an area known as the Kariba Gorge where there was an underground river before the building of a dam in modern times. Also know as the place where the knot of time is tied.

This Monomatapa kingdom was destroyed by the Zulus when they were migrating down to their present location in South Africa from an area north of the Zambezi river which they left because of a plague compounded by a severe drought. This migration probably occurred in the early 1600s.
