King Neptune (voiced by John O'Hurley in the TV series, voiced by Jeffrey Tambor in the movie) is a fictional character in Nickelodeon's animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants. The character has made three appearances (somehow, he looks completely different in each appearance).

[edit] Appearances

The first was in the episode "Neptune's Spatula". The second was in the episode "SpongeBob's Pooper Pants", which had a live-action version of him. His third appearance was in the 2004 movie The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie with his daughter Princess Mindy, where he was one of the central characters. He's also one of the reappearing guest stars of the series. In the series, he has excellent taste in Krabby patties, and he takes SpongeBob SquarePants on as his own personal fry cook. A picture of King Neptune, as seen in "Neptune's Spatula", was shown in "Krusty Towers". The third look of King Neptune is bald, or as he likes to call it: 'thinning'.

[edit] General

His name is taken from the ancient Roman god of the sea, Neptune. Often, his name---or that of his namesake---is used in expressions indicating divinity, such as "By Neptune!" or "Neptune preserve her!" This and his apparent powers imply Neptune is supposed to be a god rather than simply a king. But it has never been proven that any of the Bikini Bottomites worship him at all, though.

King Neptune lives in Atlantis, where his palace stands. However, in both appearances his palace has made, they are both different in appearance. In "Neptune's Spatula," the palace is described to be far away from Bikini Bottom. In the movie, the palace is just outside of Bikini Bottom borders. This could indicate that the Palace was moved from Atlantis to nearby Bikini Bottom. The indication that the Movie takes place after the actual series can also be supported by this.

[edit] Family

"Krusty Towers" implies the current Neptune is one of a long line, as Squidward mentions "Neptune XIV," though no known number is attached to the current Neptune. However, this could also explain how King Neptune looks, sounds, and acts different in every appearance. The Neptune declared to be "XIV" looked exactally like the Neptune in "Neptune's Spatula." In the book, "SpongeBob and the Princess," Princess Neptune (who does not resemble Mindy) comes to Bikini Bottom. Since the Movie takes place sometime after the actual series, this could imply that Neptune XIV is the father of Princess Neptune from the book and King Neptune (XV) in the Movie. Thus, Neptune XIV would be Mindy's grandfather. This is the likely family tree:
