[edit] Synopsis
King Bob, the unofficial ruler of the Third Street kids, has to take some time off school. Seeking a substitute who will not abuse his power while he's away, he picks out Gus Griswald as a meek and ordinary child, and hands him temporary reign over the whole playground. This new balance of power thrills Gus's friends, who look forward to all sorts of fun and favours. However, Gus's uncertainty is exploited by Bob's advisers, Jordan and Jerome, who push him into making all the amendments that they could never get past his predecessor. With every new modification to the rules of the playground, Gus gains more power, which eventually goes to his head. He becomes more of a tyrannical ruler than King Bob ever was, causing something of a rebellion amongst the others. Eventually, even Jordan and Jerome abandon him, seeing he is headed for his own destruction. It takes the return of King Bob for Gus to realise just what has become of him, and he returns apologetically to his old life and his best friends.
