King's Dock
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The King's Dock was a dock on the River Mersey and part of the Port of Liverpool. It was situated in the southern dock system, connected to Wapping Dock to the north and Queens Dock to the south. It had two branch docks. The dock was designed by Henry Berry and opened in 1785
The branch docks have been filled in, and are often used as a concert venue, when a large tent is erected. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra play their "Summer Proms" concert series here. Everton FC had proposed to build a new stadium here, however those plans fell through.
The site is currently being developed with a 10,000 seated capacity arena, conference centre, hotels, office space and apartments. The arena and conference facilities are due to open in January 2008 when Liverpool's year of European Capital of Culture begins.
