[edit] History

Kim moved to Summer Bay when his father Barry Hyde (Ivar Kants) became principal of Summer Bay High School. It was here that Kim became involved in an love triangle with Tasha Andrews (Isabel Lucas) and Robbie Hunter (Jason Smith) when he revealed his feelings for Tasha. Tasha told Kim that she could only ever consider him a friend and later Kim and Robbie also became friends. Kim was shocked when his ex-girlfriend came to Summer Bay with a baby, Charles Jonathan, who she claimed was Kim's son. However he later discovered that he was not Charlie's biological father. Kim was never an academic, already having repeated a grade in school, and against his father's wishes dropped out of school and got a job at the gym as a personal trainer. Kim dated Robbie's sister Kit (Amy Mizzi), but their relationship ended when she went to university in Sydney. Kim later dated Hayley Lawson (then played by Bec Hewitt) after the death of her husband Noah (Beau Brady), but the relationship did not last long and Hayley began dating Robbie's brother Scott Hunter (Kip Gamblin) and Kim began dating Zoe McCallister (Emily Perry), who unbeknownst to anyone at this time, was the Summer Bay Stalker. It was then that Hayley discovered that she was pregnant and did not know if Kim or Scott was the baby's father. Kim revealed to a furious Zoe that he may be that father of Hayley's child. Scott, Hayley and Kim did a paternity test to find out who was the baby's father. Zoe, a nurse at the hospital where the tests were conducted, found out that Scott was the baby's father but changed the results to say that Kim was the father. After Hayley and Scott broke up and Zoe was revealed to be the Summer Bay Stalker, Kim and Hayley became engaged. During this time Kim became curious of his mother's disappearance and began searching for her with the help of Morag Bellingham (Cornelia Frances). Eventually his father confessed to Kim that he had an older brother, Jonathan, who his mother had drowned in the bath, claiming that it was an accident. However on one occasion Barry returned home from work and discovered his wife trying to drown Kim. In a fit of rage he killed her and disposed of the body. He told Kim that he could tell the police, but Kim decided that his father had suffered enough and agreed to keep his secret. Hayley (now Ella Scott Lynch) later pulled out of the wedding at the last minute, admitting to Kim that she was still in love with Scott. She later gave birth to her son Noah, named after her late husband. Scott got a job offer in France and he and Hayley planned to move there and raise Noah. However Kim, still believing that he was baby Noah's father, got a court order making this impossible. Hayley, Kim and Scott appeared before a judge where Hayley argued that she had Noah's best interests at heart. Kim walked out and was hit by a car. While he was in hospital it was discovered that he could not possibly be Noah's father because of his blood type. Another paternity test revealed that Scott was Noah's father and Hayley, Scott and Noah left for France.

While in hospital Kim was treated by Dr. Rachel Armstrong (Amy Mathews). After leaving he became involved in drugs in an attempt to forget the pain of losing Noah and Hayley. Rachel became his psychiatrist and the two began to have romantic feelings for each other. The two eventually became a couple and as a result Rachel almost lost her license to practice medicine. However because of her influential father Dr. Robert Armstrong, she was allowed to continue practicing medicine as a doctor in the emergency room.

Kim was shocked to learn that his father Barry had killed the despised mayor of Summer Bay, Josh West (Daniel Collopy), when Josh found out that Barry had murdered his wife and was threatening to expose him. At this time Rachel was offered the chance to work in New York and practice psychiatry again but decided against it because she wanted to stay in Summer Bay with Kim during his father's trial. Kim found out what she had sacrificed for him and proposed to her, saying that he had enough money saved up to fly back to his father's trial.

Kim suffered burns when Zoe returned and caused an explosion at Jack Holden (Paul O'Brien) and Martha Mackenzie's (Jodi Gordon) wedding. Rachel arranged for the burns victims (including Kim, Kit, Belle Taylor (Jessica Tovey), Martha and Robbie), to fly out to see a specialist on a helicopter. However the helicopter crashed and while stranded, Kim and Kit slept together. Once they returned Rachel heard Kim and Kit discussing what had happened and confronted them. She forgave Kim and as the two were planning their marriage Kim came down with the mumps which made him unable to have children.

Kim and Rachel were granted temporary custody of Joe, the baby of Lee Morton, (the baby's biological mother); however, she returned in the following episode saying that she wanted the baby back, despite that the baby was the lovechild of disgraced ex-science teacher Mr. Braeburn. After considering court action, Rachel and Kim agreed to give Lee's son back to her. In the season finale, while Rachel was not at home, Kit returned to the Bay to tell Kim she was pregnant. After asking her who the father was, Kit told Kim it was his.
