Kilternan

Our Lady of the Wayside 'The Blue Church'

Kilternan is a village in County Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains in the South of Dublin near the border with County Wicklow.

It lies at the crossroads of the R117 and R116 regional roads.

Currently it is a mainly suburban village in rural surroundings, separated from the continuous built-up Dublin area; but as of 2007 that is due to change with major development just starting or about to start. Some people are unhappy about this. Ref:[1]

Kilternan's most notable building's are the timber constructed Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Wayside, or 'The Blue Church' as it is known locally after it's Marian colour; and the Golden Ball pub.

These two names are joined at the local soccer club, Wayside Celtic whose ground is known as The Golden Ball.

Kilternan lacks a traditional village centre or 'Main Street', but is is the location of Ireland's only (artificial) ski slope. Ref:[2]

Road signs are somewhat confused regarding the correct spelling of the name of the area. For example; signs on the M50 (Junction 15) call it Kilternan while signs at the junction on the adjoining roads refer to "Kiltiernan". Both sets erected at roughly the same time. However the correct name is the name used in this article, without the "i". [3]
