Kilmarnock Burghs (UK Parliament constituency)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kilmarnock Burghs was a district of burghs constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1832 to 1918. It represented the Ayrshire burgh of Kilmarnock, the Dumbartonshire (now Dunbartonshire) burgh of Dumbarton, the Lanarkshire burgh of Rutherglen and the Renfrewshire burghs of Renfrew and Port Glasgow.
The Kilmarnock burgh was previously within the Ayrshire constituency, Port Glasgow was within the Renfrewshire constituency, and Dumbarton, Rutherglen and Renfrew were components of Glasgow Burghs.
In 1918 the burgh of Kilmarnock was merged into a new Kilmarnock constituency, a county constituency which included areas previously within Ayrshire North and Ayrshire South. It consisted of "The county district of Kilmarnock, inclusive of all burghs situated therein except in so far as included in the Ayr District of Burghs." The burgh of Dumbarton was transferred to Dumbarton Burghs, the burgh of Port Glasgow was merged into Renfrewshire West, the burgh of Renfrew into Renfrewshire East and the burgh of Rutherglen into the Rutherglen constituency.
In 1950 part of the Kilmarnock constituency was transferred to a new constituency, Ayrshire Central, which also included an area taken from Ayshire North.
In 1974 the boundary between the Kilmarnock and Ayrshire Central constituencies was redrawn to enlarge Kilmarnock.
In 1983 the Kilmarnock constituency was merged into Kilmarnock and Loudoun.
