Killymoon Castle

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Killymoon Castle is a castle situated about one mile south east of Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland near the Ballinderry River. In 1671 the original castle was built by James Stewart whose ancestors had come from Scotland during the plantation to settle in Cookstown. In 1666 James Stewart bought the land lease for the castle site from Alan Cooke, the founder of Cookstown. The original castle was destroyed by fire in 1801.

In 1802 Colonel William Stewart decided to rebuild the castle and employed one of London’s greatest architects John Nash, to design his castle. It was Nash’s first Irish project. The second Killymoon Castle was built on a much grander scale than the original and was completed in 1803.
