Killers of the Dawn is the ninth book in The Saga of Darren Shan by Darren Shan. It is also the third book in the Vampire War trilogy.

The book starts with Darren and his friends quickly leaving the underground passages to escape the vampaneze and vampets. With them are two hostages, Steve Leonard (who reveals himself to be a half-vampaneze) and a vampet. Debbie has been taken hostage by R.V. Vancha tortures the vampet back at their base and finds out that only the vampaneze lord can kill the three hunters. Unfortunately, Steve had arranged for the police to find out about them and soon they are surrounded by the police and army. They escape by jumping through the window and Vancha escapes with the chief of police while the rest are tossed in prison. Eventually they escape because a vampet called Morgan helps Darren escape because he says that he is proud to serve the creatures of the night. Darren then helps Harkat escape which was really easy because the other guards were scared of him (they were under the impression that he had a rare and deadly disease). Then they go and get Mr. Crepsley to come free. They quickly go outside, unnoticed because the guards are still in the prison because Steve is there and he killed a nurse and two other people. Mr. Crepsley, Darren, and Harkat go down into the tunnels, unarmed because they gave their weapons up when they went to prison. They meet up with Vancha who found a small pile of weapons left by the vampaneze. They then go and find Steve, who calls the rest of the vampaneze. There is a bit of fighting between the two sides, but soon they face who they believe is the vampaneze lord. The Vampaneze Lord says that he and Mr. Crepsley have to fight alone. Larten Crepsley kills the vampaneze lord, but then Steve jumps onto his back and makes him fall by the side where he is hanging over the flaming stakes with Steve, and since he believes the Vampaneze lord is dead, he agrees to kill himself and stop holding on to Steve in exchange for a free passage for the rest. After he is dead and everyone leaves, Steve reveals himself as the Vampaneze lord to Darren.
