Kilau

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kilau is an independent coffee shop and contemporary art house situated on Little Belmont Street in the heart of Aberdeen, Scotland. Kilau's raison d'etre is "coffee, crepes and contemporary art".

Kilau opened to much acclaim in January 2004 and quickly became a cult favourite by delivering custom made baguettes (accompanied by a generous side salad or coleslaw depending on your fancy), baked goods, crépes and a panoply of hot beverages. In the summer of 2005, Kilau expanded their range of services to include soup at the behest of their regular customers.

In addition to the fantastic range and quality of consumables, Kilau serves up a relaxed atmosphere for the customer, in which they can read one of the selection of books or newspapers, engage in a game of chess or dominoes with their peers or simply listen to the chilled out music playing at the ideal volume.

Cementing Kilau's place as a favourite amongst its customers is the comfortable furniture and laid-back aura that contrary to many eateries seems designed to encourage the customers to stay and relax rather than move on as quickly as possible to free up space for more paying customers.

In addition, Kilau displays work from local artists and students from Grays School of Art. The artwork on display is all for sale, and is updated regularly. Kilau also, on occasion, hosts small concerts by some of Aberdeen's acoustic musicians.
