[edit] History
Kiem Sun was born in 1227, during the Song Dynasty, in China. In the year 1276, he was killed in battle against the Mongol hordes under Kublai Khan. After becoming Immortal, he was taught by May-Ling Shen. She later thought of him as a good person but a bad pupil. In 1680, Kiem Sun met fellow Immortal Duncan MacLeod in China. They met a mortal alchemist, who told them about a drink made out of the "Kwanlo" root, which made humans stronger and more obedient. The alchemist, however, didn’t trust Kiem Sun completely and only told him the ingredients, not the composition of the drink. Kiem Sun, then, settled in a Buddhist temple and begun to research the secrets of the drink.
In 1780, Duncan MacLeod returned to China to visit Kiem Sun. Kiem Sun was convinced that he had discovered the correct formula and wanted to show it to MacLeod. Two of his guards tasted the drink and their strength doubled. Yet, they painfully died minutes later. Duncan pleaded him to stop and Kiem Sun agreed. After Kiem Sun sent MacLeod to train with his former master May-Ling Shen, Kiem Sun restarted his research. His original purpose was to help mankind. He wanted to make humans stronger and create peace through the drink. But somewhere along the road, he became aware after centuries of seclusion on holy ground, that he didn’t stand a chance against other Immortals. From now on, it was his goal to create a small army to help him face other Immortals.
In 1992, Kiem Sun lived in a Buddhist temple in Seacouver. His young assistant Chu Lin, to whom Kiem Sun had revealed the secret of his immortality, stole the drink from him and used it for criminal purposes. Lin hired Gary Correll, a kid from the streets as a subject to the drink. The kid immediately became stronger and by Lin’s command tried to assault a bank. However, during the assault he died. It turned out that Gary was a friend of Richie Ryan, who sought Duncan MacLeod’s help. Examining the body, MacLeod realized that Kiem Sun was somehow behind this and went to talk to him. Kiem Sun told him all about Chu Lin and both decided to go after Lin. Meanwhile, Richie and his friend Angie, also decided to search for Lin, and ended up being captured by him and his gang. Kiem Sun and Duncan arrived in time and were able to scare away Lin’s gang, while Richie and Angie escaped. Duncan was then able to disarm Lin. It was then that Kiem Sun revealed his true intentions by executing Chu Lin as punishment. This act angered Duncan, who began to fight against Kiem Sun. Duncan defeated Kiem Sun, who cowered in fear because he couldn’t face Immortals on his own. Duncan spared Kiem Sun, destroyed the last sample of the drink and promised that the next time he would take Kiem Sun’s head. In 1995, Kiem Sun had moved to San Francisco, where had built a new Buddhist temple, living as an herbalist.
