[edit] History

KIEM signed on the air as Eureka's first television station on October 25, 1953. Since KIEM-TV was the only station in the Eureka market at the time, it offered programs from more than one network. Initially KIEM was affiliated with CBS; however, the station also provided programs from both NBC and ABC. After KVIQ signed on in 1958, both stations offered some ABC programs on a part-time basis. Full-time ABC coverage was provided by Redding, California ABC affiliate KRCR-TV on area cable systems.

Another commercial station, 'KREQ-TV' (later KAEF) signed on the air in 1987 offering Fox programming to the North Coast area. When that station's affiliation changed to ABC, both KVIQ and KIEM ceased offering ABC programs on a part-time basis.

By the mid-1980s, KVIQ and KIEM had swapped affiliations, with KIEM picking up the NBC affiliation. Today, KIEM has the distinction of being the only commercial outlet in the Eureka market offering local news, a distinction reflected in the station's branding as "News Channel 3" rather than "NBC3." My Network TV station KEMY offers some newscasts from KTVU in San Francisco, but does not produce its own newscasts.

KIEM is one of the last few NBC affiliates that does not have a morning newscast. In addition, KIEM signs off every weekend night.

In California, the Eureka television market and the Yuma-El Centro market are the only TV markets currently not available on either Dish Network or DirecTV.
