Khost, sometimes spelt Khowst, is a town in Afghanistan. Khost is the capital of Khost Province, a mountainous region near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan.
During the nine-year Soviet war in Afghanistan in the 1980s, the town was besieged for more than eight years. Khost's airstrip, with its 9000-foot runway, served as a base for helicopter operations by Soviet armies.
The Khost airstrip was used by American forces during the United States war in Afghanistan that commenced in October 2001.
