Kholmsk

Kholmsk (Russian: Холмск) is a town in Sakhalin Oblast, Russia, the administrative center of Kholmsky District. In Japanese, it is known as Maoka (真岡). It is the previous name of the town. It was renamed into Kholmsk in 1946. Kholmsk was founded in 1870 as a military outpost. In 1905-1945 it was a part of Japan territory. In 1945 the town was returned to Russia. Population: 35,141 (2002 Census).
