Khazar University (Azerbaijani: Xəzər Universitəsi, which directly translates as Caspian University) is a private university located in Baku, Azerbaijan.

[edit] Background information
Founded in 1991, by Prof. Hamlet Isaxanli ([1]), the University became one of the first private universities in Eastern Europe and Central Asia and the first in Azerbaijan to introduce Western-style higher education and research institution. Isaxanli formed Khazar in the interest of reform the previous, sometimes corrupt system of higher education under Soviet rule[1].

In Azerbaijan, Khazar University is recognized for providing innovative Western-style education at all levels: undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral. It also runs a Lab school with programs at kindergarten, elementary and secondary school levels.
Khazar University has a faculty body of about 200 lecturers educated and/or trained mostly in Europe and the United States. Khazar University is the pioneer in Azerbaijan to have a flexible credit system. Khazar’s curricula meet the standards of the leading universities in advanced industrialized democracies. Primary language of instruction at Khazar is English. These factors aim to increase the academic and professional opportunities for the students and train them to work in a globalizing international environment.
There are six schools at Khazar University providing education, training and research. Schools offer undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs in the following broad fields of studies:
•School of Architecture, Engineering and Applied Science: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mathematics, Management, Architecture and Civil Engineering.
•School of Economics and Management: Business Administration, Economics, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Management and International Business.
•School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences: English Language/Literature, Eastern Languages (Arabic, Persian), Western Languages (English, French, Spanish), Azerbaijani Language/Literature, Philology, Journalism, Linguistics, Political Science, International Relations, Conflict Studies, and Regional Studies (Caucasus and Central Asia, European Union, Middle East, United States).
•School of Law: Law and International Law.
•School of Medicine: Biomedicine, Medicine, Dentistry, and Public Health.
•School of Education: Elementary Education, Education Administration.
Khazar University has a broad range of research and training centers and a modern Library and Information Center (LIC). Khazar University Library and Information Center collects printed and electronic materials in Azerbaijani, English, Russian, Turkish, Arabic, Persian, German, French, Chinese and other modern European and Oriental languages in the fields of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Business Studies, Economics and Management, Education, Social Sciences, Political Science and International Relations, Legal Studies, Language Studies, Arts, Philosophy, Literature, History, and Medical Sciences. Textbooks published all over the world, as well as publications of Khazar University Press are widely presented in the library. Khazar University LIC has an extensive reference collection, including monolingual and bilingual encyclopedias.

Currently, about 1500 students are enrolled at the six schools of Khazar University. 80% of students are studying for undergraduate, 20% for graduate degrees. International students constitute more than 15% of the total enrolment. There are citizens of Turkey, Iran, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Georgia, Iraq, Lithuania, Libya, USA, UK, Denmark, Norway, South Korea, Canada, Russia, Central Asian republics and other countries studying at different schools of the University. Khazar is eager to attract more international students and researchers.

Khazar University’s partnerships with foreign universities, international foundations and academic organizations are developing every year. In fact, Khazar is one of the leading universities in the South Caucasus region in terms of linkages and partnerships with the universities abroad. Up to now, Khazar has successfully undertaken certain number of joint projects with its foreign partner universities and foundations in North America, Europe and Asia. Since 1991 Khazar has hosted hundreds of foreign visiting scholars.
