Khattak

Khattak or Khatak (Urdu: خٹک ) is a Pashtun tribe. Khattak tribe is concentrated in North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. The Khattak are a Pashtun tribe whose recorded history indicates that they originated in the area aound logar and ghazni. They largest of the tribes population is know situated in Cherat, which hosts a Special Service Group military outpost in the NWFP. Speaking a variant of the kandahari pashtu, their shaggy and hard appearance belies an origin akin to the old pawindah type. Earliest records show their migration from around modern day Bannu northwards towards modern day Kohat, Karak and Nowshera. A warrior poet by the name of Khushal Khan Khattak (1613-1690) belonged to this tribe, and his contributions to Pushto literature are considered as classic texts. They have been translated into numerous languages. The Khattaks have high literacy rate in comparison to other Pashtun tribes having achieved positions of influence throughout history.

A significant majority of the Khattak know reside in developed countries just as Malaysia, UAE, Japan, USA, Dubai but the largest contingency resides in the Britain. In particularly the regions of Birmingham (especially Alum Rock and Small Heath), London and Alesbury. This opportunity of urbanisation allows the Khattak to amass there revenue as most of the men work as Taxi drivers, builders, property developers and general labours. However like every immigrant population the second generation are more successful then the first and likewise for these pathans there children aspire to enter the top Universitys in courses just as medicine,Law,Pharmacy and Denistry. The money they then use to built luxurious homes back in the NWFP. Consequently, the region of Cherat not surprisingly has one of the highest cost for land in the whole of Pakistan and is known as 'little Britain'

There are several levels of organization within the Pashtun tribal system: the Tabar (tribe) is subdivided into kinship groups called Khels. For Khattaks these include


-Shangrakhel This khel are known for there liberalism towards the women and recent reports go as far to suggest that they may even be a brothel in the region. However like all pathans if anyone trys to push the boundries then they would face an inevitable tortorous dead at the hands of mercenaries and the womens family members


-Gunar Khel


-Qurban khel This khel are known for ability to generate revenues through the aid of property development and are probably considered the richest of all khel's. Although the majority resides in Englands and significantly larger proportion to the rest of the Khattaks live in UAE and Dubai


-Duraan khel- The people from this khel are feared throughout the khattaks for being ruthless warriors. They are notorious for there gambling and fights throughout the village.
