The name derives from the Lake Khövsgöl. Until 1933, Khatgal was the administrative center, since then it is Mörön. The largest forest areas of Mongolia are located around and to the north of lake Khövsgöl, extending the south-siberian Taiga. The lake is also sometimes called "small Baikal".
