KGB (Belarus)

The KGB, in Belarus (transliteration of "КГБ"), is the Russian-language acronym for the Committee for State Security (Russian: Комите́т Госуда́рственной Безопа́сности ; transliteration: Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti) is that country's intelligence agency.

It is the successor organization to the KGB of the Soviet Union. Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky, who founded the Cheka (the original Bolshevik secret police) was born in what is now Belarus and remains a national hero.

Major General Stsyapan Sukharenka, former deputy chairman, was appointed its leader in 2005. The KGB is controlled by the president, Alexander Lukashenko.
