KGB-FM (also 1015 KGB) is the only classic rock radio station remaining in San Diego, California, USA, broadcasting on 101.5 MHz. It is owned and operated by Clear Channel Communications. Their former competition was 103.7 KPLN The Planet, which shut down on October 25, 2005 and was replaced by Free FM, airing male-oriented talk shows.
KGB-FM formerly had an AM sister station, KGB, at 1360 kHz. KGB AM was a major contender in the AM Top 40 market in the late 1960s. KGB-FM was one of the early adopters of the FM album oriented rock format in the early 1970s, as a complement to the AM side of the house, and soon eclipsed the AM side as rock listeners moved to FM. KGB was named "Station of the Year" by Billboard Magazine in 1974.
In the early 1980s KGB AM abandoned rock and roll and was rebranded as KPOP, a pop standards station. In August 2004, the AM station adopted the call KLSD, featuring a progressive talk format. Both the former KGB AM and the current KGB FM are owned by Clear Channel Communications.
In 1974, KGB gave us a piece of Americana. Someone in the marketing department conceived the idea of dressing someone in a chicken suit to promote the station; he eventually made appearances on the field at San Diego Stadium (now Qualcomm Stadium). Today, we know him as the San Diego Chicken. Ted Giannoulas, who was a college student at San Diego State University when he was hired, still wears the suit today.

[edit] Notes and Asides
- Cindy Pace was previously at KGB's longtime rival, 103.7 The Planet.
- Ditch is the afternoon drive host. He regularly places prank calls on the show, and at the end of the show, provides the "30-minute Dirty Joke", in which the set-up is read around 6:10 PM, and the punchline is delivered around 6:40 PM.
- David "Bromo" Abromowitz's show is voice-tracked: it is prerecorded in the afternoon, and the tracks played back that night.
- The Beatles Radio Show is hosted by Dave Mason of KOGO. The show is LIVE from the KGB studios 99.9% of the time. Requests, ideas (etc.) can be e-mailed anytime at kgbeatles@101kgb.com. The show features rare Beatles performances, celebrations of Beatles historic events and much more.
- The first ever cold opening of KGB-FM is archived, and is usually played at the beginning of the Dave, Shelly & Chainsaw radio show.
