[edit] History
KFYI formerly broadcast on 910 AM, which is now the home to KFYI's sports sister station, KGME which in turn switched from 550 on the AM dial.
KFYI Host Barry Young served as the station's Program Director from 1988 until 1998. It was primarily his guidance that led to the station's methodical growth in ratings. Founded by Detroit businessman and attorney Fred Weber, KFYI is known throughout the broadcasting industry as one of America's legendary "David and Golaith" broadcasting success stories, beginning as a small and fledgling station with no listeners in July,1985 until finally becoming the top rated broadcast station in its city of license, Phoenix, Arizona in 1999. Mark Jeffrey (traffic) and Joe Adams (news) have been with the station since the beginning.
On March 8, 2006, KFYI made news when a temporary fill-in host Brian James suggested that the United States National Guard and Border Patrol should shoot to kill people illegally crossing the US-Mexican border.[1] He also stated on the air that he would be "happy to sit there with my high-powered rifle and my night scope" and kill people as they cross the border. Those remarks prompted Democratic Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard and U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton to complain to the FCC, calling the remarks "irresponsible and dangerous"[1]
KFYI has hosted other notable talk show hosts in the past including Tom Liddy, Austin Hill, Tom Leykis, Charles Goyette, Bob Mohan, John Dayl, and Joe Arpaio.
