The station was at one time acquired by Clear Channel Broadcasting, and changed to a Fox Sports Radio format. This proved to be unsuccessful, as its listener audience was greatly diminished by two competing sports radio stations.

It was yet again acquired, by First Broadcasting, and converted to its present format, with a brief period as an all-Beatles station. The station currently has a classic hits format, with a tagline of "Rock & Roldies".

KFXR's studios are located within the Dallas Arts District. Its parent company also owns local station KBIS-AM.
