[edit] Canonical Sequence Transwikification
Thanks for letting me know. Courtland 23:38, 2005 Mar 22 (UTC)
[edit] Transfers to Wiktionary
Kevin, your Bot says that it is transferring articles to Wiktionary. Unfortunately it appears to be lying. Although it is marking the articles concerned as candidates for speedy deletion, there is no sign of said articles appearing in the Wiktionary (at least not the ones that I checked -- "backhander" for instance). Please stop the bot immediately until you sort this out. I'm assuming that there is a bug in it. Of course if there is some other explanation for the missing Wiktionary entries, I would be delighted to hear it. In fact it would be nice if the Kevinbot produced a link to a full explanation of what it's doing, assuming that it is in fact working as you intended. Because, if it is, it's not obvious. In any case we don't want to lose a whole lot of useful text, so in the meantime I'm assuming the worst and reversing its changes manually. -- Derek Ross | Talk 03:44, Mar 25, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. Having read it I feel much happier about what the Bot's doing , so I'll remove the warning from the Speedy Deletions category page and reverse my manual changes. Cheers. -- Derek Ross | Talk 19:01, Mar 25, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Not transferring edit history
Looks you or your bot failed to transfer the edit history of kiriban: [[1]]. I hope that's the only case. Kappa 08:04, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Rlquall up for admin vote
One of the most prolific Tennessee Wikipedians, Rlquall, is currently being voted on for Adminship. If you'd like to support his nomination, cast a vote on the Request for adminship page. Thanks. Kaldari 19:36, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- No problem. My goal is to eventually get all of the regular Tennessee editors up to admin status (that want to be admins) so we can do a better job of keeping up the local articles and stewarding new local editors. Maybe one day we can even put together a Tennessee Wikipedia portal. Kaldari 22:09, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Transwiki stuff
I don't know what the hell is going on, but you need to make your bot pay more attention to talk pages. I objected to a transwiki for letter carrier several months ago, being nice on the talk page and not just summarily reverting everybody in sight, but my reward has been to have another bot attempt to delete it, and only fail because of compression. It really pisses me off that we have irresponsible people running bots to delete stuff, not even taking the trouble to notice if something had been posted on the talk page. I guess the next time I'm just going to revert, since the talk page is apparently no longer used. Stan 17:45, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Re : Letter carrier
Hi Kevin,
Letter carrier has been unprotected and deletion notice removed. - Mailer Diablo 03:14, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- No problem. :) - Mailer Diablo 03:23, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Thanks all! Stan 13:12, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)
[edit] I posted some comments at Administrators' noticeboard
Hello, I posted some comments at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Bot_User:KevinBot. I have some concerns about whether the bot should be automatically putting Template:Deletetranswikied notices on articles... actually, the very existence of this template is a bit problematic and contradictory. -- Curps 02:39, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I'd add, please don't run the bot until this is all squared away. -- Netoholic @ 03:09, 2005 Apr 6 (UTC)
[edit] Move to Wikisource
I think your bot has sped up the transwiki process quite nicely. I wonder if it could work on Category:Move_to_Wikisource doing the same job for Wikisource (I don't know the what the work involved in programming is, so excuse me if I'm suggesting a huge job). There certainly aren't as many articles to transwiki there, but it looks as if there's not a single editor doing the job, so it will gradually pile up (85 now). What do you think? (PS, I think your "my contributions" link at User:KevinBot doesn't work) --Dmcdevit 04:24, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I do appreciate your transwikiing, it was only a little while ago that there were hundreds! :) Now if it's not too much trouble I'd like to give it a go, but I warn you I have no experience in programming or anything like that. I don't know when I'll get around to it, but it's a worthy goal. Thanks again for your help with moving to wiktionary! --Dmcdevit 05:02, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I've got XP --Dmcdevit 05:14, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I'm emailing it to you; you can't attach using WP's "email this user", right? (Just don't want it in open view). Btw, thanks a lot! --Dmcdevit 05:20, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
[edit] We love you, Kevin!
In response to your comment that transwikiing has given you a ton of grief and no love, here's a for your efforts.
It's an ungrateful job, but if you didn't do it, nobody would. People seem to think that if you make even one dubious decision in a thousand, it's the end of the world ("it's a bot! shoot it!") Of course it's not. Keep educating people, fix what needs to be fixed, and continue helping out Wikipedia. Your efforts are appreciated. JRM 10:18, 2005 Apr 6 (UTC)
- What they said. Your efforts are appreciated and I hope you'll reconsider transwikiing again if the need arises. Mgm|(talk)
[edit] DYK Bot
Hi Kevin,
If you can take some time out of your busy schedule, will you see what's wrong with my code? This is a request from MacGyverMagic that he made personally to me, and I have gotten it working... somewhat. It gets the information correctly... moving the information is another matter. -- AllyUnion (talk) 03:45, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- It's not just transferring the information correctly to page to page. The pywikipediabot framework is only to get the page in its entirely as the text of the wikicode. So basically, if you did "Edit this page" and cut and pasted all the wiki text into a log file, that's basically what I'm doing. -- AllyUnion (talk) 21:39, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
After taking a break from the code, I looked it over and found one minor thing that I forgot which is why it broke. Then I took a step back and rewrote some things. Now it's working fine. I can start commenting the code should you like if you want to know how it works... just for you to pick up some pointers on Perl. -- AllyUnion (talk) 09:07, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
[edit] VfD template bot request
Hi there! Susvolan pointed out that the bot wouldn't really need admin rights for at least most of the tasks. After all the great work you did on transwikefaction, would you please consider helping out here? Thanks! Radiant_* 09:23, Apr 9, 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks. It's in no particular hurry anyway, just a matter of cleanup. I'd appreciate your help whenever you have time. Yours, Radiant_* 14:49, Apr 9, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Lorna Nogueira
Please don't use the same subpage as an old vfd for a new one; it makes maintenance unnecessarily painful. Either move the old vote aside (as I've done in this case, to Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Lorna Nogueira/vote1), or manually change the vfd link from the article to Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Lorna Nogueira (2) or similar. I do agree that the page needs to go, and would further support deleting the preserved copies out of userspace. —Korath (Talk) 04:58, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry, I wasn't sure the best way to handle that. But now I know. Thanks for handling that for me. Kevin Rector 05:00, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] re: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Netoholic
You said:
- See, it's all this talk about Evidence and arbitration that I find so distressing. What I'd love to see is if we could stop the legaleze and if everyone involved would just step back, take a big deep breath, and just let it go and then maybe go edit an encyclopedia article or something.
Great comment! . Wikipedia started that way, but it's really hard work to actually keep wikipedia that way. Kim Bruning 11:15, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Leaving? On Vacation
I'm sorry to hear that :-( . I was kind of hoping you would have been able to help me keep wikipedia sane. Ah well, take care! Kim Bruning 22:36, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, wikivacation good! :-) Hope to see you around when you're more back-ish :-)! Kim Bruning 10:54, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Tutorial formerly named Prince
In re: Wikipedia:How to make complex illustrations using FreeHand and Photoshop -- by all the gods, I have got to figure out a better name for this -- I see you have restored the "move to Wikibooks" template.
Note that I did not remove the tag, and am not particularly hostile to the move. I'm only concerned that it is a large and complex project and may very well be difficult to move intact. I started it in Wikipedia space because I saw other graphics tutorials here; and I started it before I became the target of Netoholic's single-minded, stalking attacks.
If you are, in some way, Netoholic's teammate, then I salute you, Sir. If you believe you are acting in truly impartial fashion, then I ask you to shoulder the burden of the move to Wikibooks. It's technically quite involved. If neither, then I suggest you have been made into Netoholic's cat's paw. His nomination for movement has effectively stopped me from contributing to the tutorial.
Thank you. — Xiong熊talk 02:32, 2005 Apr 15 (UTC)
- I am by no means Netaholic's partner. I don't really even know him. I just saw that your deal is definitely a tutorial and my understanding is that tutuorials go in Wikibooks. I'll help you move it. Kevin Rector (talk) 03:56, Apr 15, 2005 (UTC)
- Hey there, I just now saw that your tutorial is in the Wikipedia namespace and not the article namespace. So as far as I'm concerned, you can leave it right where it is. Sorry if I've been any bother to you at all. By the way, I've read some of your comments on various pages and I really enjoy your sense of humor. Kevin Rector (talk) 04:05, Apr 15, 2005 (UTC)
That's the way I saw it, too, when I first created the page. I saw other tutorials in Wikipediaspace and I figured that was where this belonged. Since then, you're the 3rd person to tag the tutorial for a move -- see the tutorial's Talk page for discussions.
I really don't know or care whether the tutorial moves. I think a far more serious problem is that I unthinkingly created it with an unbelievably cumbersome name. If you don't want to move the tutorial interwiki anymore, perhaps you can help me think of a better name for it. Thank you for being a civil person. — Xiong熊talk 04:28, 2005 Apr 15 (UTC)
- How about Wikipedia:How to make complex illustrations using FreeHand and Photoshop becomes Wikipedia:FreeHand and Photoshop Tutorial. That's the easiest name I can come up with. As far as civility goes, I try as much as possible to be as civil as possible. Of course like everyone else I do have my buttons that can get pushed sometimes. Kevin Rector (talk) 04:51, Apr 15, 2005 (UTC)
Well, Old Netty is a highly skilled button-pusher, and when he can't push the button himself, he'll look for someone else to do it for him.
Your name is better, but still clumsy -- but I appreciate the effort. For one, I don't want to tie it to those two applications. It is a tutorial on the combined use of bitmap and vector graphics editors, showing the user how to switch back and forth between the two to obtain results. I just inserted a reference to the open-source Inkscape, and I want to do more like that.
I'd really like to get some more hands at the table, but I'm too busy these days cleaning up after You Know Who to go recruiting. — Xiong熊talk 05:10, 2005 Apr 15 (UTC)
- Hmm... Well, it's not really a topic that I know much about so I'd be pretty useless to you, but here's some other name ideas for you:
- Wikipedia:Using bitmap and vector graphic editors
- Wikipedia:How to use bitmap and vector graphic editors
- Wikipedia:Advanced image editing
- Wikipedia:Advanced image editing tutorial
- Wikipedia:How to do advanced image editing
- Maybe those will help?? Kevin Rector (talk) 05:16, Apr 15, 2005 (UTC)
The perspective of a newcomer to graphics work is exactly what is needed. It's a tutorial; seasoned pros know all the tricks I plan to show new guys. Everything about it should make sense to somebody with some basic computer skills who has dabbled in these two areas.
I like Wikipedia:Advanced image editing, because it is the shortest. You just gloss over the specifics (in the title), and that's fine. It does not really point to the topic with the correct jargon, though. Perhaps Wikipedia:Advanced graphic design? Only thing about that is, I don't like to use the word "advanced" -- scares people off. Must think harder. — Xiong熊talk 05:28, 2005 Apr 15 (UTC)
- ooh... Wikipedia:Digital image editing because it is an article about how to edit an image that is digital. Kevin Rector (talk) 05:31, Apr 15, 2005 (UTC)
Fragmented discussion merged to: Wikipedia talk:How to make complex illustrations using FreeHand and Photoshop -- this discussion belongs in a central area. Delete all above if you like; it's preserved. — Xiong熊talk 06:24, 2005 Apr 15 (UTC)
[edit] Compromise on Talk:Titanic (1997 movie)
You're welcome, Kevin, but all the thanks go to you. At times, I've felt flustered just reading some arguments, but sometimes I think it's best to either move on or try to find a compromise. Thank you for taking the harder road and most likely succeeding in doing so. --Deathphoenix 04:09, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Convention
Are you interested in the Charter Convention? If so, please email me. — Xiong熊talk 05:11, 2005 Apr 15 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I'm not sure what you're talking about. However, now I want to know what you're talking about to know if I am interested in it. Kevin Rector (talk) 05:31, Apr 15, 2005 (UTC)
- What I mean to say is, I know what a charter convention is, but I'm not clear on what the charter convention is. Kevin Rector (talk) 05:38, Apr 15, 2005 (UTC)
You need to email me. — Xiong熊talk 06:04, 2005 Apr 15 (UTC)
[edit] Photographs!
Kevin, I understand that you apparently have a problem with my keeping several articles which you do not like on my User pages, however, since I am not violating any polices and many other Wikipedians do this, will you please stop putting all my photos up for deletion? Tony
- I don't think there's any harm in keeping a page or two in your userspace, as long as these pages aren't linked from the main encyclopedia space (and I believe we have a bot to check that?). Of course someone keeping hundreds of deleted pages in userspace would be pushing it, but I don't think anyone's doing that. Radiant_* 08:13, Apr 14, 2005 (UTC) Having a few user of pages that have been deleted is okay, so please leave my photographs alone and remove the the votes for deletion tags from them! Tony
[edit] Titanic
Kevin, I don't get into edit wars. I have reverted your removal of the picture once and will not do so again (usually someone else shows up and does it for me, and if they don't I take that as a sign to drop the idea).
Well I think we already discussed the idea and the consensus seemed to be that it as a perfectly good picture. The new one is more appropriate for the plot, but this is still a very pretty picture so I think it should be in the Award section. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 02:45, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Meelar reverted it, and that's that. I must say I don't appreciate your tone or your false accusations of working against consensus. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 12:26, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
[edit] I'm tired
I have angry new editors I would like to be friends with at WP:LDS and WP:JW each shaking fists at me this week over suppressing the truth about "the Morg" and "the Borg". I guess welcoming new editors is sometimes hard work. Any help you can give at Jehovah's Witnesses and Anti-Mormonism will be appreciated. I think I better drop out for a while. Wikiholiday!!! p.s. Lectures on communication skills welcome. Tom Haws 18:50, Apr 22, 2005 (UTC)
