[edit] High school career

Love is in his senior year in at Lake Oswego High School, and has signed a national letter of intent to play college basketball at UCLA after graduating high school.[2] Love, who has worn number 42 for his entire basketball career, has received permission from Walt Hazzard to wear the same number with UCLA.[3] UCLA retired Hazzard's number 42 in 1996.

In 2005, Love was the center of controversy when Nike removed him from its Portland Elite Legends AAU team because he had agreed to participate in the Reebok ABCD Camp against other top recruits such as Greg Oden.[4] Love went on to play for the Southern California All-Stars, who compiled an unprecedented 45-0 record with Love, who garnered 4 MVP awards along the way.

As a sophomore, Love led Lake Oswego to its first-ever Oregon state high school basketball championship, losing to Jesuit High School 57-53. In 2006, Love and the Lakers returned to the championship, winning 59-57 over South Medford and Kyle Singler. In a rematch in the 2007 state championship, Singler and South Medford defeated Lake Oswego 58-54. In the game, Love had 37 points and 15 rebounds and finished his high school career as the all-time leading scorer in Oregon boys' basketball history with 2,628 points, even after missing half his sophomore season, breaking a 50-year-old Oregon high school record. Despite his age, Love is considered an articulate sports personality and has been featured in numerous print and television media. Love's father, Stan Love, played for the Baltimore Bullets, the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs in the 1970s, and also worked as a bodyguard for the Beach Boys in the late 1970s. He is the cousin the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, the late Carl Wilson, and the late Dennis Wilson, and the nephew of Beach Boys singer Mike Love.
