Kevin Johnson (boxer)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kevin "kingpin" Johnson (September 9 , 1979) is a US-American heavyweight boxer.

Johnson, an unheralded amateur with only a 14-2 amateur record (at least he won the New Jersey Golden Gloves) turned pro in 2002. After only three fights the lanky counterpuncher was thrown in with an undefeated Olympian in Timor Ibragimov who had already 13 victories. To the great surprise of the audience he held Ibragimov to a draw. Three fights later in 2004 he handily beat well-known clubfighter Robert Wiggins who was 19-3-1 at the time. After being somewhat inactive in 2005 he had another good win over a clubfighter in Robert Hawkins 2006 against whom he pitched a shutout. At the end of March 2007 he is 14-0-1 and widely regarded as America's best heavyweight prospect but lacks power as is documented by only 6 KOs.

He cites his mother as his biggest inspiration, works in real estate and property management in his home state, and is the single parent of a six-year-old (as of 2006) daughter, Fatima, who he has been raising since the death of her mother in 2002.

He has sparred with Alexander Povetkin and has openly called out Sultan Ibragimov repeatedly after the Russian claimed he couldn#t find an opponent. He is promoted by New Yorker promoter Joe de Guardia.
